NZ report comment next steps
Next-steps phrases and full comment examples for NZ reports — constructive, plain-language goals by NZC level for English, mathematics and general comments.
This page is a practical summary of publicly available guidance. Always follow your school's reporting template and professional judgement.
Quick compliance checklist
- Every next step is specific, teachable and phrased in plain language.
- Next steps are future-focused and strengths-based, not a list of deficits.
- The next step is something whānau can support at home where relevant.
What makes a good next step in an NZ report
- Specific and small enough to act on this term — not “improve writing” but “reread writing aloud to find run-on sentences”.
- Connected to the evidence in the comment, so whānau can see why it matters.
- Framed as growth, using language like “next step”, “focus for next term” or “to keep growing”.
- Where it helps, includes one way the whānau can join in — reading together, basic facts practice, talking about the news.
Avoid
- “Keep it up” — no information about learning.
- “Needs to try harder” — effort language with no strategy.
- Three or more next steps — one clear goal is more likely to happen.

Full next-steps examples in context
Examples
- General: “Hine is a thoughtful member of Room 7 who volunteers ideas and supports new students. Next step: taking a leading role in group tasks so her organisational skills grow alongside her kindness.”
- English, towards the expected level: “Sam is building confidence towards the expected NZC level in reading. He recognises most letter sounds and uses pictures to solve new words. Next step: pointing to the first sound of an unfamiliar word before using the picture, with daily guided reading.”
- Mathematics, above the expected level: “Tane is progressing above the expected NZC level in mathematics. He explains his strategies clearly and applies them to unfamiliar problems. Next step: exploring problems with more than one possible answer and justifying which solution is most efficient.”
Phrasing next steps whānau can act on
The Ministry of Education’s plain language reporting guidance puts whānau at the centre: reports should be understood on one reading. A next step phrased for home turns the report into a partnership.
- Name the activity: “reading picture books together and talking about the story”, “practising times tables in the car”.
- Keep it short — one sentence for the goal, optionally one for how home can help.
- Use “we” for what school will do: “We will practise this in weekly small-group lessons.”
